In an effort to provide apps that are research based interventions, an informal study in 2012-2013 school year showed that Title I and Special Education/Resource students using The 8 Great Word Patterns, had greater growth than their regular ed. peers. Special Ed. students showed the most growth (five times the expected growth) to Title I students in a before school program (three times growth).
So, in school year 2013-2014 two formal studies are being conducted. One study is with learning-disabled students enrolled in special units, grades 1-3. The group, using the 8 Great Word Patterns app 15 minutes a day, four days a week, have shown normal (regular ed.) growth; while the group who was the control for the first ½ of the school year, actually showed no growth, and some loss. We expect this trend to continue through the end of the school year when the School District in the study will publish the results. It is interesting to note, that because of this study we developed the 1a and 1b levels of the 8 Great. We eliminated the step of typing the words, as this was too cumbersome for younger grade students.
Another university study is looking at one classroom, fourth grade where ½ the class (random students) are given the treatment (8 Great Word Patterns) the first four months, and the others added the last four months. Early results show increased fluency levels, but more importantly comprehension scores were better! After all, that is what we really want, Reading progress as opposed to Phonics or Words-per-minute growth.
These studies will be written this summer and published soon after.
